Dear Caboolture Special School community members

- where quality teaching and learning takes place every school day, evidenced by credible data showing strong student outcomes
- of strong connection
- with high community standing
Our ‘next steps’ will be about strengthening and refining our work.
I look forward to sharing the written school review report information with colleagues and school community members when released in coming weeks.

Book Fair
Thank you to Katie R, organising team and supporters for an amazing Book Fair this week.
National Reconciliation Week (NRW)
The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia - https://www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week/
Principal Satellite Office (S Block)
I have been trialling some time performing this work in a satellite office in S Block, in order to provide increased visibility and accessibility. I have enjoyed connecting more deeply with students and staff alike in areas of our school that are some distance from the main office. I plan on continuing this initiative, focused on investing in people connections across the school.
School Supervisor visit
Ric Day (school supervisor) visited this week and passed on his congratulations to all school staff on their individual and collective efforts that have led to a very successful School Review process.
Ric and I visited some classes where we enjoyed our talented educators facilitating learning experiences for students based on the Australian Curriculum, within safe, engaging, communicative and learning enriched environments.
Dance Incursions
Students and staff have been enjoying the free dance experiences on site.

Learning, Playing, and Growing Together!
It has been wonderful to see so many students giving their best effort in their learning this term. A big shout-out to everyone showing commitment, enthusiasm, and positivity in their classrooms and across the school.
Starman has been busy supporting students in their learning through play, bringing plenty of smiles and excitement along the way! Class 11 had a surprise visit in the PBL room where they discovered the star sheep being well looked after by none other than Starman himself.
As our school continues to grow, some of our PBL award processes have evolved to support our changing needs. One exciting new addition is the PBL Prize Shop, now open for our Silver Award recipients. Students have loved visiting the PBL room to select a prize to celebrate their success. It’s a great way to recognise their ongoing commitment to our school values.
We are incredibly proud of our students for consistently demonstrating our whole-school PBL expectations. This fortnight, our focus rule is:
Respect for Others: We wait and take turns with others.
Students have been engaging in PBL lessons where they practise this rule through games, activities, and role-playing. It’s fantastic to see our learners building respectful behaviours in such fun and meaningful ways.
Keep up the great work, everyone!

It certainly has been a week of celebrating reading and the joy of sharing a story.
This also coincides with the National Family Reading Month. In its 29th year Family Reading Month is all about promoting reading at home, families are encouraged to spend 10 minutes everyday sharing the joy of reading.
I know many of our students look forward to their weekly library visit to borrow a new book to take home and share! Across the school you can always find students enjoying a story!

Happy Reading Everyone!

Moderation
Our teachers are busy at work collecting their final pieces of evidence ready for the end of semester Moderation and Assessment and Reporting process.
Moderation involves the review and verification of student assessment to ensure that judgements are accurate and aligned with learning goals. This allows our teachers to have the opportunity to work with other staff to confirm consistent judgement decisions to be able to have accurate reporting.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australia author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family day cares, childcare centres, bookshops, family homes and many other places around the country.
Now in its 25th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
We read “The Truck Cat” for National Simultaneous Storytime 2025, written by Deborah Frenkel, illustrated by Danny Snell, and published by Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing. This year some of our classes came together to share the story “The Truck Cat” with same aged peers and participated in various craft and online activities to engage with this story and boost our literacy learning.

Below is a video reading if the story to share at home.

Until next time,

Managing Angry Feelings
Our children learn most from watching how we handle our own emotions. Often the emotion we find most difficult to deal with in ourselves and our kids, is anger.
Anger is often viewed as a ‘bad’ feeling, one we should not feel. But remember a feeling is a feeling, neither good nor bad. Angry feelings are actually important because they tell us something is wrong that needs to be worked out!
It is the behaviour that comes from angry feelings that can be determined as good (desirable, acceptable) or bad (undesirable, unacceptable). It is important we make the difference between feelings and behaviour clear to our children.
The message we need to get across in our families is this:
‘It is o.k. to feel angry but it is not okay to hurt people, yourself or things, when we are feeling angry.’
Expressing our anger in hurtful, destructive or violent ways does not help us deal with the feelings and the situation that made us feel angry in the first place. Some things to model and encourage our kids to do are:
- Acknowledge when we are feeling angry to ourselves.
- It is likely that we will have to go and calm down a little first before we can deal with the situation in a rational manner. Finding things that help us cool down a little is important as we cannot expect someone to listen to us if we are likely to become abusive or aggressive. Calming things may be going to another room, lying down, listening to music, having a drink, going for a run, etc.
- Try to talk to the person concerned using an I- statement i.e. Start with the words “I feel angry when…” This is less threatening then starting with “You make me feel angry when..” Tell them what it is that you want to change. Pick a time when the person you are cranky with seems calm and ready to listen.
You still may not be able to get things the way you want them, but you will have communicated your feelings and over time the other person may be able to see things from your viewpoint and be ready to negotiate.

Chaplaincy News
Hello Everyone!
My name is Krystal, and I’m excited to introduce myself as the Chaplain here at Caboolture Special School.
A big part of what I do is simply being present. You will often find me hanging out in classrooms, chatting with students and staff, joining in activities or just being available wherever I am needed. I believe some of the most meaningful connections happen in everyday moments and I love getting to know others in an environment that is familiar and relaxing for them.
I am available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and if I am not out and about in the school community you will find me in the Chappy Room. The Chappy Room is located in lower C Block and my door is always open so feel free to pop in for a chat.
I look forward to continuing to build connections with you and being part of this rich and vibrant community.

Until next time
Krystal Wess
