Caboolture Special School Week 1, Term 4, 2023
Principal News
Dear Caboolture Special School community members
Welcome back and thank you for a terrific start to Term 4.
We have just over 40 school days left for this year and I look forward to working alongside students, staff, parents, carers and school community members to ensure we finish 2023 strongly.
Student attendance
85.3% - thank you for the (ongoing) collective effort here. Every day counts at school.
Thank you Liz Radford
Thank you to Liz Radford for your valuable work on site while our Guidance Officer Asha has been on Leave. We welcome back Asha next week.
Colour Fun Run
The P&C supported Colour Fun Run is on Saturday 28 October from 9.30-11.30am at school on the back oval. This event was very well supported by our school community last year and we look forward to an even bigger event this year. Lee Street State Special School community members have been invited too. Go to www.australianfundraising.com.au to register. Just click ‘login’ when you get there to get started. I hope you can join us on the day but even if you cannot, you can still register via the provided website link to support our school.
Swimming
Term 4 school swimming lessons are coming up fast. Keep an eye out for information. Swimming lessons during Term 4 cater for every student at our school and are free for students. I strongly encourage all students to attend.
New enrolments
We are continuing to welcome new students to our school and have had a very healthy enquiry for 2024. There is perhaps no greater compliment as an educator than to be entrusted by a child’s parent or carers to facilitate quality learning experiences for their child. Thank you.
Parent/Carer Information – 2024 classes
Parents and carers are invited to submit student information they feel is relevant for 2024 classes through the official 2024 parent/carer class information form. This parent/carer information form accompanied a SeeSaw message home to families sent on Monday 2/10. There are also hard copies of the parent/carer information forms available through the front office. Due date for return of the parent/carer information form is 13/10. Forms can be returned to the school's front office or emailed to me through sbola5@eq.edu.au
A reminder that completing this form is optional.
2024 student class placements are planned to be announced to parents and carers during week 8 of this term.
New iPads and Laptops
I am excited to announce that we have 50 x new iPads and 5 x new laptops arriving in coming weeks. These devices will be distributed throughout classrooms to enhance student learning and communication.
J Block Playground Shade Structure
Another significant infrastructure improvement for our school is now in place with the installation of this shade area, in time for the warmer weeks and months to come.
2024 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP)
Stakeholder priorities are being sought for consideration for inclusion in our 2024 AIP. Our school’s AIP outlines major focus areas for our school throughout 2024. Do you have any ideas about school improvement that you would like to share? Please email me directly on sbola5@eq.edu.au
Lake Tinaroo Environmental Education Centre - school review
I am grateful to have spent some time this week alongside fellow departmental school reviewers in the Atherton Tablelands, contributing to the work of our school colleagues in these centres through the school review process, ensuring all students have reasonable access to the engaging learning activities on site.
Queensland Teachers’ Union (QTU) Special Education Workshop and Annual General Meeting
I attended this annual workshop and meeting in Milton today as a member of the QTU Special Education Committee, advocating for the Special Education sector state-wide, and of course for the people within the sector. It was a valuable and most worthwhile investment of time, working alongside invested parties, including Assistant Director General Hayley Stevenson.
I look forward to seeing you around our wonderful school soon.
Best wishes and regards

Welcome Back to Term 4
Welcome back to Term 4, hope everyone had an enjoyable break.
We have had some work completed during the holidays in J Block Playground with the installation of the Shade Structure, just in time for the warmer months to come.
Our garden area planted by the PBL team with the help of students is thriving beautifully. Well done team. Classes have been able to sample and enjoy the benefits of fresh grown produce.
Kind regards

Kindness
Kindness is not an everyday word these days. We use words like `respect’ readily but even this does not contain most of the attributes that `kindness’ does.
So what is kindness? Kindness has been defined as:
- the quality of being warmhearted and considerate and humane, sympathetic
- tendency to be kind and forgiving
- a kind act - marked by charitable behaviour, marked by mild disposition, pleasantness, tenderness and concern for others; a recognized value in many cultures and religions
Research has shown that acts of kindness do not only benefit receivers of the kind act, but also the giver. This is the result of the release of neurotransmitters, which are responsible for feelings of contentment and relaxation, when such acts are committed.
How to teach kindness to our children
- Be a good role model - Children observe our behaviour, and are likely to copy the ways we treat others (and ourselves)
- Use the word `kindness’ to describe acts of compassion, care, empathy, forgiveness
- Provide simple, clear explanations about how other people feel when they are sad or hurt. Give examples of how kindness can be used in these situations to uplift a person’s moods.
- From an early age praise early acts of kindness - When your toddler gives up his favourite toy to a younger sibling who's crying, make sure he knows you acknowledge his action
- Encourage your child to help others – at home and in the community. For older children encourage participation in social justice programs, like helping feed the homeless. Not only will this act of kindness feel good but also will give an understanding of what others have to endure to survive.
- Say you're sorry – Admitting that you are wrong, or did not act appropriately can be very hard, but often the act of humiliation is a show of kindness in itself.
If we all practiced doing a few acts of kindness every day, the results would be twofold – not only would others be uplifted, but also we would receive the health benefits that come with doing good deeds.
Yours sincerely

Teacher Aide Professional Learning Journey
I just wanted to let our school community know all about our wonderful Teacher Aides and the Professional Learning they have been undertaking this year. Every Wednesday our Teacher Aides meet with our Acting Business Manager - Margaret to hear important messages and get updates on what is happening in our very busy and lively school.
I have been able to work alongside our Teacher Aide team to ask them for suggestions as to what else they would like to learn about in regards to developing their knoweldge of the curriculum, communication and supporting behaviour. We have had great guest speakers from our teaching team and school leaders who have shared their knowledge and expertise to a very attentive group of professionals.
We have explored topics such as Key Word Sign, Positive Behaviour for Learning and Occupational Health and Well-being- we even brushed up on our skills to be able to deliver the Australian National Anthem in Key Word Sign at our assembly! We look forward to more Professional Learning opportunities during Term 4 to end our year strong and confident.
Enjoy Term 4
